PAINTING

Fresh Lively Watercolor
Tuesdays, Sept. 16 - Oct. 21, 6-8:30 pm, $90
Instructor: Elizabeth Scroggin
Explore this exciting medium as you learn to paint nature. Class will include detailed work as well as loose impressionist styles and abstract washes. A supply list will be given upon registration.

Adventures in Acrylic Painting II
Fridays, Sept. 19 - Oct. 24, 1:30-4 pm, $90
Instructor: Elizabeth Scroggin
Explore different techniques using acrylic paint. Learn paint impasto as well as washes and glazes.

CLAY

Handbuilt in Clay
Tuesdays, Sept. 16 - Oct. 21, 6-8:30 pm, $90 + $15 supply fee for clay payable to instructor
Instructor: Jackie Hoy
Using brown stoneware clay, you will learn the principles of construction, hand building, applying textures, and learning color-glazing techniques for specific projects ranging from tea pots and platters to bowls or vases.

Altering Thrown and Handbuilt Pots
Tuesdays, Oct. 28 - Dec. 2, 6-8:30 pm, $90 + $15 supply fee for clay payable to instructor
Instructor: Cecelia Pippin
Beginning to intermediate students will throw and hand build stoneware clay pots, then alter and carve these pieces to create “natural inspired” art. Glaze and stain will be applied to enhance the surface texture and provide color.

Clay Ornaments
Tuesday, Dec. 9, 6-8:30 pm, $45 + $5 supply fee for clay payable to instructor
Instructor: Jackie Hoy
Texture and glaze to create great holiday gift ornaments for friends and family. Works will be fired and finished before Dec. 16.

KNITTING

Beginning Knitting
Tuesdays, Sept. 16 - Oct. 21, 6-8:30 pm, $72 (bring supplies, or purchase them here)
Instructor: Robyn Raines
Cast-on, bind-off, knit, purl, and felt using single-point & circular needles.  All skills and techniques will be taught in project formats using patterns. By the end of the class, each student will have at least three finished projects and the basic skills to keep on knitting.

NEW Intermediate Knitting: Winter Accessories
Fridays, Oct. 24 - Dec. 5, 1:30-3:30 pm, $72 (bring supplies, or purchase them here)
Instructor: Robyn Raines
Focus on winter gear while learning new techniques. Choose from a variety of projects including hats, mittens and scarves. By the end of the class, each student will have at least 2 finished projects and several new skills. Students should already know the basics: cast-on, knit, purl, and bind-off.

WORKSHOPS

Simple Origami (1 of 3)
Saturday, Sept. 27, 1-4:30 pm, $45 + $5 supply fee
Instructor: Linda Saliba
Paper folding for those new to origami who want to make simple elegant keepsakes from paper. This session is the first of three related Saturday workshops. Take one, two or all three sessions for a great exploration of these Asian inspirations.

NEW Meditative Suminigashi (2 of 3)
Saturday, Oct. 11, 1:30-4 pm, $50 + $5 supply fee
Instructor: Linda Saliba
Capture a moment of time on sheets of Japanese rice paper using a floating ink technique. Each design will be unique; the papers can be used alone, folded into origami models, collaged onto other papers or embellished further.

An Introduction to Stained Glass
Saturday, June 28, 10:30 am – 3:30 pm, $60
Instructor: Robert Delapp
Perfect for beginners or for those who need brush up on forgotten techniques. Explore the tools, glass materials, do’s, don’ts and safety facts for this ancient form of art and illumination. Take home your completed glass to display in your window. Examples of Delapp’s recent work can be seen on State Street in Bristol, Va.

NEW Wearable Fantasies
Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 18, 10:30 am - 4 pm, Oct. 19, 1:30-4:30 pm, $55
Instructor: Quinn Hawksworth
Choose an article of apparel (shirt, shoes, bag?) and an image (Moroccan Bazaar, Monet’s Garden?) and turn them into wearable art. Let your imagination roam- bring along those odds and ends you’ve stashed: beads, yarns, lace, old jewelry, mementos and flea market finds. Use them to create a unique and personal item to wear.

Creating a Collage with Origami and Summinigashi (3 of 3)
Saturday , Nov. 1, 1:30-4 pm, $50 + $5 supply fee
Instructor: Linda Saliba
This combination of the first two workshops, will allow students to make marbled papers first, then fold origami models. Participants are encouraged to bring some work from sessions 1 & 2 as well as any favorite papers they may have to collage work onto art boards for an original piece of art.

Holiday Workshop - Origami with Mica Potato Prints

Make holiday paper folds for your tree and or cards with a unique shimmery potato twist!

Art Studio

Tuesday Nights, 6 to 7:30 pm
$40 per session for members/$45 for non-members; $10 per class for members/$12 for non-members
Ages 5-12

Each Tuesday of the month features basic art instruction in a specific medium (listed below). Students will enjoy touring the galleries to reinforce art concepts taught. Instructors will encourage your child’s individual exploration to create unique works of art.

Art is best done in pairs! Children, family and friends are invited to enjoy the morning exploring and experiencing art. A different art medium will be offered each month.

Kids of All Ages!

Jack-O-Lantern's Day Out
Saturday, October 25, 10:30 am -1:30 pm, $5 for Arts Center members, $7 for non-members
Jack-o’-Lantern has much to do to get ready for his celebration on Halloween. Come for pumpkin painting, mask making, treats and games! Costumed artists will be on site to assist. All supplies will be provided.

Elves Workshop
American Heritage Holiday
Saturday, November 17, 10:30 am -1 pm
5 for Arts Center members, $7 for non-members
John E. Rose of Abingdon’s Rose Cabinet Shop celebrated American Heritage as he produced many beautiful and practical items of furniture. Join us in crafting traditional Christmas gift cards, pins, and decorations for your home and loved ones. .

School programs are available for pre-K through 12, both on site at the Abingdon museum and directly in the schools through our VanGogh Outreach Program.

On-Site Programs

HOMESCHOOL ART PROGRAM
Every first and third Wednesday, Sept. 3 - Dec. 3, 1-3 pm
1-3 p.m.
$55 members/$60 non-members
Developed especially for homeschool children ages 5 – 12, the program will include guided tours of the Museum galleries and hands-on art activities each session.


ART EXPRESS
A program for third graders, ART EXPRESS offers youngsters across the region a full day's visit to the Arts Center. During their day, students tour the art museum - a first-time experience for many children - then take part in two art activities related to what they have seen in the galleries. Pre and post-visit classroom activities enable teachers and students alike to maximize the experience.

Tour and TourPlus
These programs - available for grades pre-K through 12 - provide school groups a tour and, in the case of TourPlus, an age-appropriate, related art activity. These programs are generally shorter than ART EXPRESS and can be tailored to meet the needs of individual classroom groups.



ArtShops
A special program for high school students, ArtShops provide 4-hour workshops in a visual arts medium not readily available in the regular curriculum. Previous workshops have featured everything from papermaking to printmaking to found object sculpture.



ArtWorks
Designed for grades K-12 to provide a more in-depth study and hands-on approach of various art processes to include painting, book arts, clay and printmaking. 3-hour program.



Heritage Express
An SOL-based program for fourth grade Virginia History students which focuses on our rich cultural heritage. The 3.5 hour program offers opportunities to enrich and reinforce students' classroom learning experiences through guided tours of the cultural heritage galleries at the Arts Center and the Fields-Penn 1860 House Museum and a hands-on art project.


Our student gallery enables youngsters across the region to not only exhibit their own work, but to see that of their peers in a museum setting. Exhibition opportunities are available to schools across the region.

Outreach Programs

VanGogh Outreach
Van Gogh Outreach takes the art room directly into the second grade public school classroom four times a year with SOL-based lessons and an emphasis on the visual arts using the study of China, Egypt and Native American Indians. Classes are 90 minutes in length with a 30-minute lecture and a 60-minute art project.



Outreach Art Camps
Camps are offered to grades K-5 and in counties throughout the region. Children are given many opportunities to explore and create art using a wide range of mediums.



Outreach Art Enrichment
Custom-designed classes to meet the needs of teachers and coordinators directing activites for elementary students after the close of the regular school day. A wide range of art experiences are provided in 90-minute sessions to promote creativity and reinforce the standars of learning in a fun, relaxed and hands-on environment.
